NB 210-22-1 ENG – ASCE myLearning Continuing Education Subscription
National Bulletin: 210-22-1 Date: October 8, 2021
Subject: ENG – ASCE myLearning Continuing Education Subscription

Purpose.  To notify NRCS personnel of the renewal of the subscription to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) myLearning Continuing Education webinars and guided online courses for NRCS employees.

Expiration Date.  September 30, 2023

Background.  NRCS renewed the subscription with ASCE to provide webinars and guided online courses for NRCS engineers, geologists, landscape architects, and other NRCS personnel in need of engineering technical training. This renews the 2019-2021 subscription, which expired October 1, 2021. This renewed subscription provides access to 760 live and on-demand webinars and 30 six-week guided online courses under the Construction Engineering technical area. This subscription is valid through September 30, 2023.

Explanation.  The ASCE Webinar Course Catalog lists over 1,000 individual or group, live or on-demand webinars. The attachment “2019-2021 - NRCS Most-Viewed ASCE Webinars” (attachment A) lists the webinars viewed 5 or more times by NRCS employees under the 2019-2021 subscription. This list is not comprehensive of all ASCE offerings but illustrates the range of topics available.

Live and On-Demand Webinars normally run from one to three hours in duration. Both individual and group webinars are available to NRCS employees. An employee may obtain continuing education credits by logging into their own accounts and completing a test after viewing a webinar.

An employee viewing a webinar alone should select the individual webinar option when ordering. Group webinars allow the possibility for up to 30 people to view the webinar together (gathered in the same physical location). One member of the group orders the webinar and shares the ordering information with the other participants. After viewing the webinar, all members of the group can then go online to claim their continuing education credits by completing a test.

For full instructions on accessing the webinar catalog and ordering live or on-demand webinars, see the attachment titled “ASCE Continuing Education for NRCS Employees - Live and On-Demand Webinars” (attachment B).

The ASCE Guided Online Courses catalog lists 12 six-week courses under the Construction Engineering Technical area that are available to NRCS employees. The subscription covers 30 enrollments in these courses. Employees wishing to enroll in a guided online course should familiarize themselves with the course requirements and discuss this commitment with their supervisor prior to enrolling. For more information on accessing and enrolling in Guided Online Courses, see the attachment titled, “ASCE Continuing Education for NRCS Employees – Guided Online Courses” (attachment C).

NRCS encourages employees and their supervisors to include webinars and guided online courses in the employee’s individual development plans to prioritize completing them as needed training.

Some important information:

• NRCS is not able to offer access to district or other partner employees.
• Employees must have or create an account with ASCE using their usda.gov email address to indicate to ASCE that they are authorized to use the NRCS discount code
• Employees must have an ASCE account to log webinars and courses ordered and completed, and to track continuing education credits. Certificates for completed webinars and courses are available through the ASCE myLearning portal. This may be important for individuals who need to provide proof of continuing education to their state licensure boards to maintain professional licensure.
• Individuals who wish to include a record of their webinar or course training in AgLearn can upload their certificate of completion into AgLearn. See the instructions in the attachment titled, “Recording External Learning in AgLearn” (attachment D).
• Offering webinars or guided online courses under the pre-paid subscription represents a significant financial commitment by NRCS to provide this training. Once an employee enrolls in a webinar or guided online course it counts against the subscription.
• Remember to take the follow-up exams to claim continuing education credits, particularly if courses are needed to maintain professional licensure. During the 2019 to 2021 subscription employees claimed only about 60% of continuing education credits available to them.
