NB 250-19-4 FNM – Announcement of the ASABE Annual Meeting
National Bulletin: 250-19-4 Date: November 6, 2018
Subject: FNM – Announcement of the ASABE Annual Meeting

Action Requested By:  February 8, 2019

Purpose.  To announce the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) Annual International Meeting.

Expiration Date.  July 11, 2019

Background.  The ASABE Annual International Meeting (AIM) is an international forum for maintaining and exploring new science and technology transfer applicable to our mission. This year’s conference will be held from July 7 to July 10, 2019, in Boston, MA. Details for the conference, including hotel and registration information, can be found at http://www.asabemeetings.org/.

It is essential that our employees stay abreast of emerging technologies in these areas to better serve our customers. AIM provides an important forum for NRCS technical specialists to interact with the developers of the science and technology we use in providing conservation treatments on American working lands to address both emerging and current resource problems.

Explanation.  Priority to attend the biannual meeting will be given to employees engaging in one or more of the following activities:

  • Presenting a paper or poster, or making a presentation

  • Conducting training

  • Maintaining credits for professional development units or continuing education credits

  • Serving as an active member of a technical committee meeting at the annual meeting

  • Receiving a major award

Certain travel restrictions are in place, so meeting these criteria does not guarantee travel approval.

Employees may use the conference for continuing education requirements to maintain a license or certification, but it must be documented in their individual development plan (IDP) in AgLearn. Each administrative office will need to prepare travel authorizations and cover related travel costs for their employees attending this conference.

NRCS must submit a single request in CTAT to obtain the necessary approvals for this meeting.  Therefore, we need to collect information on all attendees, regardless of their location. In order to obtain conference attendance approvals for NRCS employees interested in attending this conference, State conservationists, national center directors, directors of the Pacific Islands and Caribbean Areas, regional conservationists, and NHQ division directors are to submit the following information:

  • The attached spreadsheet, “ASABE Meeting Calculation Worksheet.”  This worksheet provides the information necessary to obtain conference attendance approvals.  Please complete the requested information as accurately as possible for each employee interested in attending this conference.

  • A completed and signed composite Form NRCS-FNM-72, “Meeting Attendance Approval” (also attached).  Summarize the information for all employees in the State, center, or other administrative unit interested in attending this conference.  Only one form per State, center, or other administrative unit should be returned.

Return the spreadsheet and the FNM-72 by February 8, 2019, to Deron Davis, State conservation engineer in Amherst, MA, at deron.davis@ma.usda.gov, with a copy to the national environmental engineer, at bill.reck@wdc.usda.gov.  Please include “ASABE 2019” in the subject line.

Please note that the information required to obtain conference attendance approval is extensive.  Please estimate costs as closely as possible in order to maximize the number of attendees NRCS is able to send.

Contact.  For general information about the conference, please contact Bill Reck, National Environmental Engineer, Conservation Engineering Division, at (202) 720-4485.
